Car Care Tips: Wiper Blades

posted on

In the past, Vesas Automotive has highlighted windshield wiper blades as being
an important element of your car care regiment, but we never really got into the
specifics as to the different ways to take care of them. Now that icy windows and
snowy nights are here once more, we thought it would be a good idea to put
some substance behind our advice. In this case: wiper blades!

A big “don’t” for Winter
We’ve all been there: late for work one winter morning, you head out to your car
only to see frost and ice clinging to the windshield and think “Well, better put the
wiper blades on.” While it might give your defroster a boost, this deicing
technique wreaks havoc with the rubber strips on your wipers and ends up
costing you money! As a rule wiper blades only deliver good performance for six
to nine months, but that time gets cut in half when they’re used as an impromptu
ice scraper, meaning you’ll be replacing those blades a lot more often. Increase
your car’s warmup time in the morning or put some oldfashioned elbow grease
into scraping off the windshield by hand instead. Trust us, your wallet will thank
you!

Raise ‘em up!
It might look a little goofy, but putting your wipers in the “raised” position before
you go to bed or after your park at work in the morning can go a long way towards
wiper blade longevity. Leaving them to freeze tight to the windshield can cause
the rubber to deteriorate, and forcibly ripping them up and off the windshield when
scraping off ice can damage the blade itself. Raising up your blades can help
prevent all that, but just remember to put them back down again before you head
out on the road.

Well that’s it for now, but stay tuned for more assistance from Vesas Automotive
and as always, happy driving!
